What are we?
A small group of writers who meet together regularly to share their own work.
Where do we meet?
At the St Mary Magdalene Parish Rooms in Richmond. These are above La Buvette restaurant in the passageway (Church Court) by the side of Tesco in George Street leading up to the church. Or from the bus station, the same passageway (Church Walk) opposite the Travelodge in Paradise Road down by the Buvette restaurant alongside the church.
Enter the restaurant courtyard and at the back through the doorway to the restaurant lavatories is a staircase leading to the meeting room above.
The formal address is 6 Church Walk TW9 1SN
When do we meet?
On Wednesday evenings between 8 and 10 pm with occasional seasonal breaks.
How much does it cost?
£5 a session. This covers the cost of the hire of our room. What kind of writing do we do? We mainly read from on-going novels in any genre, short stories and poems but in the past our group has included scripts for plays, travel pieces and autobiographies.
What happens in a session?
We read in turn from our on-going work, usually for about 10minutes. This is followed by a short feed-back session where comments are welcome. We find it helps to bring copies of the work we intend to read, but this isn’t essential.
Are there any competitions?
Yes. We mark Valentine’s Day with a love themed competition and Halloween with a scary story/poem competition. Very small prizes are awarded. Do we have to read every week? No. Most members choose to but others only read occasionally but are equally valued because of their contributions in the feedback sessions.
Does the group have a leader?
Someone has to collect the money and ensure reading time is allotted as fairly as possible. So we have a chairperson who runs each session.
Are there any social activities?
Some of us meet after the session for a drink at the Prince’s Head in Richmond.
Are new members welcome?
Very much so! How would I contact the group? You could just turn up on a Wednesday evening at 8 o’clock or contact us by email at:
email@example.com for more information.
